First Experience Speaking on a Panel

I just had my first experience speaking on a panel, and it was both enlightening and inspiring! I had the chance to talk about a sense of belonging and what it’s like to build one as an international high school student. As a high schooler, I truly believe that our challenges are unique compared to those faced by university students. While there are definitely overlaps, there’s a real need for spaces where high school students can openly discuss their struggles.

The audience was incredibly receptive, even enjoying a few jokes and sassy remarks I threw in along the way. It made the discussion feel open and genuine, and I loved every moment of it. I’m grateful to have worked alongside such amazing panelists, and a special shoutout to Dr. Linda Hui Yang. Linda was an incredible mentor. Her support made us all feel confident and well-rounded in our perspectives.

And, of course, a big thanks to my uncle Nilesh Makwana who was there with advice during the car ride over—and even jumped in with a few comments during the panel! His upbeat attitude and encouragement meant a lot.

This experience has left me excited for more opportunities in public speaking, and I’m determined to make this the first of many to come.
